Hayes’s wife Lucy Webb Hayes (1831-1889) had suffered a stroke and died at age 57 three months previously, on June 25, 1889. Hayes wrote this letter to Clare Hanson Dorsey Mohun (1840-1918), his and his wife’s mutual friend, assuring her that “my precious wife” would have wanted Mohun to keep the “old hymn book” belonging to “the Dear One.” A devoted Methodist, Lucy was heavily involved in the temperance movement, and later became the president of the Woman’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church.
